The Course Venue - don’t worry if you don’t live near our venue - great county village accommodation nearby from £30 per night!
Holmewood Hall is an impressive Victorian mansion house, set among fourteen acres of parkland in the picturesque village of Holme in Cambridgeshire. The Hall is easy to find, just south of Peterborough off Junction 15 of the A1 with good road links north and south. Peterborough railway station is just 8 miles away situated on the East Coast mainline linking the north and south of the UK, with a 50-minute journey to London Kings Cross and Stanstead airport is only an hours drive away.
The Hall provides an impressive backdrop for our NEBOSH courses, and a relaxing environment in which to learn. At almost every turn, you will find views over formal gardens with sweeping lawns and mature trees, leading on to a landscape of meadows and open countryside.

The Hall has an interesting history. The present day Hall was built by the distinguished Wells family, who made their fortune from shipbuilding in the 16th century, the Hall even gets a mention in Samuel Pepys’s Diary. The Hall also played a crucial role during the second world war, as the secret headquarters of the American Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner of the CIA) the Hall was used to train spies, who were dropped behind enemy lines to supply munitions. Unfortunately we do not train spies, but are more than happy to help you with your NEBOSH training!
The wildlife in the formal gardens delights our delegates. NEBOSH course groups often have fun during tea and lunch breaks, spotting green woodpeckers, watching deer graze and hedgehogs forage for food! Be warned after two weeks at the Hall you will be talking like Bill Oddie!
We have found that the environment in which people learn is critical to the success of our NEBOSH courses. Providing a stimulating learning environment where people are comfortable, relaxed and at ease with their surroundings encourages mindsets to evolve.
We also believe you should be well fed! The Hall provides a wonderful two course hot and cold sit down lunch, with lots of healthy options catering for all tastes and dietary requirements. Unfortunately, or perhaps not! There are always some rather tempting deserts on offer; will power will have to prevail for 2 weeks! The refreshments are varied and plentiful. Internet access is also available to keep you in touch with the outside world. We know you will enjoy every aspect of your experience. Our NEBOSH course pass rates and delegate feed-back reflect the attention we pay to ensuring your comfort during the course.

Content of the NEBOSH Certificate Course
Our NEBOSH course content is unitised in accordance with the NEBOSH syllabus. Each part of the NEBOSH course is taught as a concise element of each unit. For example NGC1 Element 1 known as Foundations in Health and Safety is broken down into six key learning elements.

Our NEBOSH course presentation materials also match the delegate handout materials, so it is easy to follow each aspect of the NEBOSH course. The whole NEBOSH course is designed to ensure a minimal amount of ‘note taking’ we feel that this approach allows delegates to listen, learn, discuss and contribute their own ideas, and of course ask questions!

NEBOSH NGC3: Health and safety practical application:
This part of the NEBOSH course has no syllabus content associated with it. Although we provide you with a training session devoted to undertaking the NEBOSH practical assessment.
The purpose of the NEBOSH practical assessment is to assess if you can apply the knowledge gained during the NGC1 and NGC2 units of study. It is hoped that following two weeks of studing health and safety, that you will be able to identify hazards (potential to cause harm) and know how to deal with them. This is achieved in the following way:
Part 1 - NEBOSH course Delegates undertake a 45 minute inspection of a workplace, identifying hazards, unsafe acts and conditions as well as good practice. A key part of this inspection stage is outlining the immediate and longer term actions needed to deal with the issues encountered during the inspection. A form is provided to record this information, which is completed during the inspection walk round in your own hand writing using the provided observation sheets and clip board.
Part 2 - The second part of the NEBOSH practical assessment is to use the information obtained during the 45 minute inspection of the workplace to write a short report to management. Delegates are given 1 hour to write a report outlining what has been identified and what needs to be done to achieve a safe place and safe system of work. The report must outline the main findings in a concise way persuasively convincing the reader of the need and importance of dealing with the issues identified to improve health and safety.
NEBOSH course delegates undertaking the practical assessment NGC3
The NEBOSH course practical assessment is not just about testing knowledge in an examination situation. It is very important that delegates complete the NEBOSH course knowing how to carry out a workplace inspection and write a report outlining the findings. Report writing is a key communication skill. We find that some delegates who attend have never written formal reports. So developing this key skill helps them communicate any message effectively and has benefits far beyond the management of health and safety and passing the NEBOSH practical assessment.
Lack of communication is often a root cause of accidents in the workplace, so the NEBOSH course practical assessment should be seen as a key part of the course and a skill worth learning and developing.
NEBOSH Course Duration
The duration of study for the NEBOSH National General Certificate is a minimum of 87 hours plus private study and background reading. This is delivered as follows:
NEBOSH Certificate Week 1: NGC1 - 5 Days NEBOSH Certificate Week 2: NGC2 - 5 Days

NEBOSH National General Certificate - Course Content Information
We put a lot of effort into ensuring the following aspects of our NEBOSH course content:
Our NEBOSH course presentation materials are up-to-date with current legal requirments
We keep our NEBOSH and all other materials up-to-date with current legal requirements, including criminal, civil and common law as well as best practice. This would not be essential to pass the NEBOSH exam, however our average delegate is working in industry, often a very hazardous industrial sector. We feel it essential that our NEBOSH course materials reflect the legal requirments they will face back in the workplace, and not just cover a basic NEBOSH course syllabus for the sake of passing an exam.
For example, the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 comes into force in the UK on the 6th April 2008. This bill introduces a new offence, across the UK, for prosecuting companies and other organisations where there has been a gross failing, throughout the organisation, in the management of health and safety with fatal consequences.
Although NEBOSH would not test a candidate’s knowledge of this at examination, we will ensure our NEBOSH delegates know about the proposed bill and its implications. Remember, it’s not just about passing a NEBOSH examination, it’s essential that delegates leave the NEBOSH course with an overall awareness of health and safety, not just the contents of the NEBOSH syllabus.
Our NEBOSH course presentation materials match the handouts.
This enables delegates to work through the information with the tutor, ensuring they can plot their position through the NEBOSH course at all times.
Our NEBOSH course materials reflect the content of NEBOSH Examiners’ Reports
NEBOSH Examiners’ Reports for the NEBOSH National General Certificate are published regularly with the intention of providing an overview of how all candidates sitting NEBOSH National and Local examinations are answering the NEBOSH examination questions.
While they don’t provide ‘model answers’ the NEBOSH examiners reports do give an indication of the key points that NEBOSH Examiners were expecting to see in candidates’ answers, and whether or not they were found on each particular occasion.
We consider it essential to consider these NEBOSH examiners reports, and refine our NEBOSH course materials accordingly. After all, if every person in the UK answering the same NEBOSH examination question is making common mistakes in answering a particular NEBOSH question, then course providers must reconsider their presentation of that particular area of the NEBOSH syllabus. Constant improvement in our NEBOSH course materials, their delivery and how the delegates interact with the information provided is essential to understanding the subjects and achieving high pass rates in NEBOSH training.
We can’t and won’t rest on our laurels and use the same old NEBOSH course material on every NEBOSH course, just as a company can’t use the same old risk assessments. Constant review is essential.
Our NEBOSH course presentation materials contain images and graphics.
We try to ensure our NEBOSH materials are clear and concise, if something can be illustrated by a picture or diagram, rather than words, then it is far more likely to be understood. We analysis the information we have to communicate and then identify the most effective way of getting the information to the delegate. Our NEBOSH presentations contain many short video clips. We use a wide variety of video clips to illustrate points throughout the NEBOSH course, particularly for complex issues. These clips are embedded in our presentation materials to ensure the flow of the presentation is not interrupted.
Use of a wide variety of video and DVDs on our NEBOSH courses
We select good quality safety videos (nowadays DVD’s!) to complement various topic areas of the NEBOSH course. People tend to remember what they see in videos, which aids information retention for the examinations. Also videos provide good opportunities for discussion and case study enabling us to bring real time work situations into the training room.
Our NEBOSH course presentation materials contain real examples.
Oracle Safety Associates are consultants and have direct experience of actually implementing in the workplace, what they teach in the training room. We are not just trainers who rely on the same materials and anecdotes. Our regular consultancy work enables us to show NEBOSH delegates how things work in practice, identifying pitfalls and obstacles to improving health and safety. Again, its not just about passing the NEBOSH exam, someone leaving the NEBOSH course needs to understand how to deal with safety issues in the workplace. We bring pictures and video footage to the training room to use as examples, bringing interest to the course and discussion points to aid learning and information retention.
Keeping our NEBOSH course material, syllabus and anecdotes familiar to all delegates
Have you ever been on a training course where the Tutor used examples and anecdotes, which always seams to be focused in one direction? For example if the Tutor’s past experience is construction and the topic areas are always explained using construction industry examples. This may potentially pose a barrier to learning and in some cases irritate or annoy some delegates. This situation has been known to effect the enjoyment of the course and NEBOSH examination success.
We always try to use many different examples and never focus on one particular industry sector. Fortunately we are consultants that have a wide range of experience; which includes, deep coal mining, oil industry, construction, arts and media, theatre and show business, music industry, health care, manufacturing, retail, facilities management, local and central government to name a few! We will always do our utmost to ensure a good mix of examples, AND ensure everyone understands the topic areas presented. In this way everyone can learn in an enjoyable atmosphere and not get lost in a sea of information.
Creative Learning Techniques used on our NEBOSH courses
What happens when you give a group of NEBOSH delegates a box of plasticine? In two weeks they become artists! We have found that providing tactile learning aids such as plasticine helps people learn. Studies have shown that the amount of information retained by such techniques can help information retention, up to 300%! We do have to draw a line when they start to create effigies of the Tutor!

The NEBOSH course group that created the above in November 2007, all gained credits and distinctions in their NEBOSH exams, so perhaps it works…..!
Course Technology
We have been designing and running health and safety training courses for many years, we can even remember the days when an overhead projector and a blackboard was the ultimate in training room technology!
Prior to the invention of the LCD projector, we designed slides, printed them on to slide film, mounted them and used a slide projector. Which was very impressive at the time, bringing an element of colour and definition to presentations. Unfortunately a typo or a spelling mistake was not easily changed! Slides did not allow for easy up dates and changes to be made to the training materials.
Technology has moved on rapidly and at Oracle Safety Associates we embrace every move and like to be at the cutting edge. We use a variety of software to create our presentation materials and high powered computers to ensure the smooth delivery of video and images to the screen.
We believe the quality of the image people see is very important, so we always use LCD XGA projectors to ensure crisp, clear images with proper colour rendition are delivered to the screen.
However, a projected image is only as good as what its projecting at, so we always use high quality projection screens with the ultimate in reflectivity. Size is also important, and we prefer to use a 7’ x 7’ projection screen. Which means a group of 12 people will always be able to see projected images. No squinting at the screen or creaked necks on our NEBOSH courses!
We also don’t like our groups sitting in the dark, so we use projectors that deliver a 3,200 lumens image, which is daylight bright. Even strong sunlight shining directly on the screen will not washout the projected image. So we can have all of the lights on! Our current projector of choice is the Panasonic PT-LB60NTE, the world’s fastest wireless projector, no cables are needed as it has its own wireless network, which up to six computers can link to.
We also use a good sound system, which delivers clarity of sound and volume, which is important as hearing ability often differs within a delegate group. We can also have a disco at break times. Many of our delegates are Bee Gees fans and remember Saturday Night Fever.....
Our attention to detail takes every aspect of our courses into account. We aim to deliver the best possible training experience to delegates attending our NEBOSH courses.
