Background
The NEBOSH International Certificate is based on the National General Certificate, which focused on health and safety compliance within the United Kingdom legal framework. With the worldwide success of the NGC, NEBOSH saw a need to develop an international qualification, which would provide a broad introduction to health and safety in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO OSH 2001) standards. |
|
Head of Safety at British Sugar, Dr Ash Solanki: “I consider the NEBOSH training carried out by Oracle Safety Associates has helped us deliver a beneficial change in leadership and behaviour across our factories. This has had a direct result in reducing lost time injuries.” |
The key difference between the United Kingdom National General Certificate and the International Certificate is the applicability of legal requirements. Although the International Certificate does not contain law, it does focus on local country laws and cultural factors where necessary and relevant.
The principles involved in achieving health and safety requirements are the same regardless of geographical location and legal compliance, making the International Certificate the perfect general qualification wherever in the world it is taken.
The NEBOSH International Certificate is accepted by IOSH - the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health - in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). The NGC is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership (AIIRSM).
The Course Venue
Don’t worry if you don’t live near our venue - great county village accommodation nearby from £25 per night! Stansted airport is nearby and London Heathrow is a train ride away.
Holmewood Hall is an impressive Victorian mansion house, set among fourteen acres of parkland in the picturesque village of Holme in Cambridgeshire. The Hall is easy to find, just south of Peterborough off Junction 15 of the A1 with good road links north and south. Peterborough railway station is just 8 miles away situated on the East Coast mainline linking the north and south of the UK, with a 50-minute journey to London Kings Cross and Stanstead airport is only an hours drive away.
The Hall provides an impressive backdrop for our NEBOSH courses, and a relaxing environment in which to learn. At almost every turn, you will find views over formal gardens with sweeping lawns and mature trees, leading on to a landscape of meadows and open countryside.

The Hall has an interesting history. The present day Hall was built by the distinguished Wells family, who made their fortune from shipbuilding in the 16th century, the Hall even gets a mention in Samuel Pepys’s Diary. The Hall also played a crucial role during the second world war, as the secret headquarters of the American Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner of the CIA) the Hall was used to train spies, who were dropped behind enemy lines to supply munitions. Unfortunately we do not train spies, but are more than happy to help you with your NEBOSH training!
The wildlife in the formal gardens delights our delegates. NEBOSH course groups often have fun during tea and lunch breaks, spotting green woodpeckers, watching deer graze and hedgehogs forage for food! Be warned after two weeks at the Hall you will be talking like Bill Oddie!
We have found that the environment in which people learn is critical to the success of our NEBOSH courses. Providing a stimulating learning environment where people are comfortable, relaxed and at ease with their surroundings encourages mindsets to evolve.
We also believe you should be well fed! The Hall provides a wonderful two course hot and cold sit down lunch, with lots of healthy options catering for all tastes and dietary requirements. Unfortunately, or perhaps not! There are always some rather tempting deserts on offer; will power will have to prevail for 2 weeks! The refreshments are varied and plentiful. Internet access is also available to keep you in touch with the outside world. We know you will enjoy every aspect of your experience. Our NEBOSH course pass rates and delegate feed-back reflect the attention we pay to ensuring your comfort during the course.

Course Aim
The course aims to provide those making day-to-day health and safety decisions with a broad knowledge of health and safety to ensure that the right decisions are made in the correct circumstances. It also enables the delegate to manage health and safety in an efficient and effective way in line with the principles of health and safety management systems, such as HS (G) 65, OSHA, OHSAS 18001 and BS8800. Delegates will gain a wide understanding of risk management and the common hazards faced in workplaces throughout the world.
NEBOSH International Certificate - Entry requirments
There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualification or skills, to undertake the NEBOSH International General Certificate course. However it should be noted that the examinations are offered, and must be answered, in English only. While candidates may not have English as a first language, a good understanding of English (including some relevant technical vocabulary) is a general requirement to study the course and sit the examination.
There are no formal entry requirments to the NEBOSH International General Certificate but it should be noted that the examination includes a requirement to write a short report. Although this is covered as part of the NEBOSH course.
Candidates should be conversant with the main requirements of recognised international standards as they apply generally to the workplace. An extremely useful source of reference in this respect is the “ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety” (4th edition, ISBN 92-2-109203-8), although this is too voluminous to recommend as a course text. The Encyclopaedia can be accessed free of charge at http://www.ilocis.org/en/contilo.html United Kingdom HSC Approved Codes of Practice and HSE guidance publications, as well as many US OSHA publications (e.g. the OSHA Manual), may also provide a good guide for candidates. However many people attend our NEBOSH courses without a detailed knowledge of health and safety. Enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard are as important as any prior knowledge. Experience is also very important, the experiences of our delegates are unique to each NEBOSH course, everyone can learn something from someone else!
Who Should Attend
The NEBOSH International General Certificate is aimed at anyone who has an interest in health and safety. Our delegates come from all backgrounds and professions. IGC3: International health and safety practical application
This part of the NEBOSH course has no syllabus content associated with it. Although we provide you with a training session devoted to undertaking the NEBOSH practical assessment.
The purpose of the NEBOSH practical assessment is to assess if you can apply the knowledge gained during the IGC1 and IGC2 units of study. It is hoped that following two weeks of studing health and safety, that you will be able to identify hazards (potential to cause harm) and know how to deal with them. This is achieved in the following way:
Part 1 - NEBOSH course Delegates undertake a 45 minute inspection of a workplace, identifying hazards, unsafe acts and conditions as well as good practice. A key part of this inspection stage is outlining the immediate and longer term actions needed to deal with the issues encountered during the inspection. A form is provided to record this information, which is completed during the inspection walk round in your own hand writing using the provided observation sheets and clip board.
Part 2 - The second part of the NEBOSH practical assessment is to use the information obtained during the 45 minute inspection of the workplace to write a short report to management. Delegates are given 1 hour to write a report outlining what has been identified and what needs to be done to achieve a safe place and safe system of work. The report must outline the main findings in a concise way persuasively convincing the reader of the need and importance of dealing with the issues identified to improve health and safety.
Lack of communication is often a root cause of accidents in the workplace, so the NEBOSH course practical assessment should be seen as a key part of the course and a skill worth learning and developing.
