IOSH (Institution of Occupational Health and Safety) Managing Safely

It is also recognised by all parties that time can erode both knowledge and skill. To overcome this, IOSH are now recommending that delegates who took the full IOSH Managing Safely course within the last three years should sit a one-day re-certification course prior to the end of their three-year period. IOSH are recommending that those who took the full course more than three years ago undertake the full four-day course.

Background

IOSH Managing Safely has been around for many years, and has become the international industry standard for helping to establish health and safety competance for those with responsibilities for managing others in the workplace. Many companies throughout the world use this course as part of their company ‘core competency’ requirements for management, and with good reason! This course is unlike any other; you’ll find it a practical programme, full of step-by-step guidance, and equally as important, it has a sharp business focus. But you’ll also find that the highly innovative format and content engages and inspires delegates – critical to getting essential health and safety messages across in your organisation.

It’s designed to give managers all they need to know to help them handle health and safety in their teams. The flexible high impact programme covers all the main health and safety issues, and includes a session tackling environmental management.

Managing safely is for managers and supervisors in any sector, and any organisation. It’s designed to get managers up to speed on the practical actions they need to take to handle health and safety in their teams.

At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

	Apply basic management principles and practices to health and safety issues as part of a total business strategy.
	Set practical health and safety objectives, plan and implement courses of action to achieve those objectives.
	Recognise safety and health hazards present in the workplace.
	Ensure adequate information, training and supervision is provided.
	Investigate incidents and take remedial action.
	Understand and implement their legal responsibilities.

Course Duration

The course is delivered over 4 Days. An ’in house’ course can be delivered over a period of time provided all 4 days are covered and the test is completed.

Examination Information

The course is assessed by:

1	A short written/objective multiple-choice paper.
2	A project, which takes the form of a careful examination of your work environment and a risk assessment.

Delegates, who attend and successfully complete both the practical and written assessments, will be awarded the Managing Safety certificate, issued by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in the UK. The practical assessment must be completed in the delegate’s workplace and submitted within two weeks of completing the course. A minimum pass grade of 70% is required for certification.
